With the help of flexibility, we enable the energy transition

CheckWatt AB is an energy service company offering measurement, monitoring, and control of energy storage, renewable electricity production, and flexible electricity consumption.

CheckWatt started with the long-term goal that every household and business should be able to contribute to a stable, renewable energy system with abundant access to cheap, clean electricity.

Maximize the value of flexibility in the electricity system

Electrification and technological development within renewable energy offer hope for a future powered by clean and cheap energy in abundance. At the same time, the energy transition faces several challenges: capacity shortages and rising costs for the electricity grid, low revenues for producers when large amounts of solar and wind power are produced simultaneously, and the need to ensure system stability with an increasing share of renewable electricity. At CheckWatt, we believe flexibility — through batteries, energy storage, and flexible consumption and production — is key to addressing these challenges and accelerating the energy transition. Our mission is to ensure this flexibility creates maximum value, both for our customers and for the electricity system as a whole.

How will we achieve our goals?

01

Knowledgeable and at the forefront

Be well-informed and at the forefront of developments in renewable energy. This includes staying up to date and complying with legislation, practices, and recommendations applicable to our products and services.

02

Transparency

Be transparent both internally and with our customers and partners, to find solutions to problems together. In support work, we believe that respectful communication and efficient case handling build long-term, profitable relationships.

03

Culture of open communication

Always encourage open and direct dialogue and strive for continuous learning. The quality of our deliveries is proportional to the organization’s level of knowledge. We can always improve and learn something new every day.

04

Measure and follow-up

Regularly measure and follow up on our own operations to ensure that both we and our customers can feel confident that what we deliver meets expectations. Key metrics for us include service uptime, support case handling time, and the functionality of our systems.

Some key milestones for CheckWatt

We started our operations in 2017 as a small company working with measurement of renewable electricity production for the former Swedish electricity certificate system. Today, we are the leading independent aggregator in the Nordics, supporting the power system together with our customers and contributing to the expansion of renewable energy in several countries.

2022

First delivery of ancillary services

In the summer of 2022, we deliver ancillary services for the first time, aimed at maintaining the balance between consumption and production in the electricity system. The first delivery involves the FFR service and is carried out with a 200 kW battery.

2022

First delivery of the FCR-D ancillary service

In November 2022, we reach the, at that time, minimum bid volume of 1 megawatt and are able to deliver the FCR-D ancillary service for the first time.

2022/2023

First delivery of local flexibility

In the winter of 2022/2023, we deliver local flexibility for the first time with the aim of improving efficiency and enabling new connections in local distribution networks. The first delivery is made with a battery of 300 kilowatt on the, at that time, existing market Stockholm Flex.

2023

1,000 batteries connected to our virtual power plant

In October 2023, we reached the milestone of 1,000 connected battery systems to our virtual power plant, just under ten months after expanding our offering to also include households.

2023

CheckWatt wins prize for energy innovation of the year

In November 2023 We win first prize in the innovation competition E-Prize in the category of energy optimization. E-Prize is awarded by Aktuell Hållbarhet, Dagens Industri, and E.ON to “the smartest energy innovations right now.” .

2024

Bidding with 100 MW on ancillary services

In the summer of 2024, we reach a milestone by delivering ancillary services with resources totaling 100 megawatts, corresponding to one-fifth of the total demand for the FCR-D ancillary service in Sweden.

2024

10,000 batteries connected to our virtual power plant

Shortly thereafter, we reach 10,000 sites in our virtual power plant. The connected systems consist of batteries from about thirty manufacturers and include, in addition to batteries, other flexible resources such as industrial fans and vehicle chargers.

2024/2025

Delivering local flexibility with 500 batteries in Gothenburg and Mölndal

For the first time, we deliver local flexibility from batteries in homeowners’ homes. In total, over 500 batteries participate in Effekthandel Väst, a marketplace operated by Göteborg Energi and Mölndal Energi.

2025

CheckWatt AI is launched

After a successful pilot project, CheckWatt AI is widely launched in February 2025. Using AI models to forecast electricity usage and production, batteries in households — alongside delivering ancillary services — also create value by charging during low electricity prices and discharging during high prices.

2025

Ancillary services delivered for the first time in Finland

After approval by the Finnish electricity system operator Fingrid, CheckWatt delivers for the first time the FCR-N ancillary service from a 200 kW battery installed by our Finnish partner company Solarvoima. Shortly afterwards, 200 households start delivering the FCR-D ancillary service.

2025

First delivery of mFRR

In May 2025, CheckWatt begins delivering the mFRR ancillary service, aimed at managing forecast errors primarily in renewable energy production. The first deliveries take place in collaboration with Bixia as the balance responsible party.
